An ode to the imperfection of Goddesses
Recently, I stumbled upon a rather unsettling YouTube video about how to awaken your inner goddess. A woman with a stern gaze and a sultry voice told me how attitude and charm can get you anything—true magic!
How to be like a goddess, an archetype of supernatural beauty and power. The woman also spoke slogans such as: Awaken your inner goddess, dance with her, and let her enrich your life. Become a goddess of seduction and irresistible to every man. Could I be that too, a goddess? Do I even want that? To always be charming, beautiful, and strong? And for whom? Is striving for divinity healthy, and will it ultimately make you happy?
I decided to do a little research into what it means to be a goddess.
Aphrodite's father complex?
During my search I found something unexpected: no goddess seems to be perfect! For example, the most famous goddess is Aphrodite, whom I thought was an archetype.
A type of beauty and perfection. Now it turns out that Aphrodite can also be very jealous and frequently cheats on mortal men… I don't immediately see this as divine behavior. Yet, we don't examine Aphrodite for analysis. We never wonder where her promiscuous behavior comes from. We never ask her the questions we ask ourselves and our friends: Could this be due to an inferiority complex? Does she not trust men and therefore cheat on her, to get ahead of her humorless husband? No. Aphrodite is a goddess; she has her whims and fiery temperament. What she does is her business, and we still see Aphrodite in all her power. Aphrodite herself doesn't seem to moralize her own behavior and worships herself nonetheless.
There are even goddesses who appear to have almost no divine qualities at all, like the Greek Eris, the goddess of chaos. This appealed to me because, much as I'd like to, I usually can't identify with man-killer Aphrodite. When I wake up, I often feel chaotic rather than sexy. Eris loves chaos, disharmony, and bloodshed. She holds the Apple of Discord in her hand and drops it when she loves her. The last time she did this was at a wedding she wasn't invited to (because she's always looking for trouble), so you can guess the marriage didn't last.
My point is this: Goddesses seem to completely accept themselves! They don't restrict their own behavior and then indulge in a moralizing sandwich of self-analysis and criticism. They respect themselves and their behavior, whether reprehensible or not. They don't suppress negative feelings with mindfulness, nor do they avoid confrontation. They take themselves seriously. Rather, they worship themselves. And while I wouldn't want to get into a heated argument with these ladies, I can learn something from them. Namely, this: it's completely okay how I feel and how I am, everything about it. From my indecisiveness to my vanity! That I can stand up for what I believe in, in my own way.
Now, I'm not at all pro-jealousy, bloodshed, or breaking the hearts of mortal men, but I am pro-authenticity. I see so many women around me who keep themselves small, lost in doubt, and shy. Perhaps it's because the only goddess we've truly grown up with is the Virgin Mary? And that's why we conceal our sexuality, and even worse, don't honor it?
Who knows! What it does seem is that of the many goddesses floating around in the atmosphere, few don't believe in themselves. From the athlete Nike, who strives for victory and success, to the Afro-Brazilian transgender deity Logonede, who is female half the year and male the other half.
My conclusion is that what would make me a goddess isn't perfection or supernatural powers, but rather a total surrender to who I am and celebrating that with joy! Away with shame and conformity!
Think about it: what makes you unique? What are your superpowers? Make a list of keywords. And who knows? Maybe, when you take your own passions more seriously and believe in your own power, beauty, and truth, you'll one day recognize the goddess within.

The right clothes can give your confidence a huge boost and also help you express your mood.
- Live like a Goddess. Do what you want, what you feel like doing. As women, we've grown up in a society where women sacrifice themselves, putting themselves last. People will actually be more likely to respect you and appreciate your honesty.
